A beginners guide to website conversions and why you need to know them.

What is a website conversion?

A website conversion is when someone takes action on your website. For example, they may get in touch with you via the contact form or purchase a product.

A website visitor becomes a conversion when the visitor takes action on your website, they then move from a static visitor to an active website conversion.

You can decide what website conversions are important to you. Perhaps you want someone to subscribe to your lead magnet or you wanted someone to fill out a form. The choice is yours and this will depend on the goals of your website.

What is a conversion rate?

A conversion rate is the percentage of your website visitors that complete your selected business goal. For example, if you are an eCommerce website and you wish people to purchase a product.

You would class a website conversion as the number of people who purchase your product.

The conversion rate is the percentage of people who visit your website that actually purchase a product.

You can work it out with a simple math equation.

[People who purchase/total number of website visits] x 100 = conversion rate.

To demonstrate let’s say you have had 10,000 people visit your website over the past month, of that 200 people have actually purchased your product.

200/10000 x 100 = 2%

This means that your website has a conversion of 2%. Or 2% of all visitors will purchase your product.

This is a helpful metric to determine how many people you need in order to sell a product or to get in touch.

Another example on why this is useful. Let’s say you are a service business and your primary goal is for potential clients to get in touch. Your website has a 2% conversion rate.

If you want to get 2 people every week to get in touch with you, then you need at least 100 people visiting your website every week to get your 2 people getting in touch.
